Frequently Asked Questions
General Queries
-
I work across a range of speculative fiction subgenres, including fantasy, science fiction, horror, dystopian fiction and magical realism.
Speculative fiction is a broad category, so if your manuscript sits slightly between genres, that is absolutely fine. My main focus is on fantasy and sci-fi, but I’m open to other speculative projects that feel like a strong fit.
-
Yes, I edit manuscripts in British or American English.
-
Every author is different, and self-publishing is an intentional choice. My clients are mostly first-time or early-career authors who are serious about their work and ready to invest in a high-quality final product to be proud of.
I work with authors who want to maintain creative control while benefiting from professional editorial feedback and guidance. If this sounds like you, EV Editing may be the right fit for your manuscript.
-
Once you submit the application form, I’ll review the details you’ve shared and be in touch if your project sounds like a strong fit.
Completing the form does not commit you to booking a service; it is simply the first step in exploring whether we would be a good fit to work together.
-
Pricing depends on the service you choose, as well as the scope and length of your manuscript. Once I know more about your manuscript and goals, I’ll be able to recommend the most appropriate service and share the relevant pricing information.
-
No. All editorial work and deliverables are completed by a human editor.
EV Editing does not use generative AI to create, analyse, edit, summarise, or complete client deliverables, and does not upload or submit any part of a client’s manuscript or project materials to AI tools or AI training systems.
Editorial Services Queries
-
The Standalone Developmental Edit is for authors who want focused, big-picture editorial support before moving on to later stages of the publishing process.
It includes:
Onboarding questionnaire
Consultation call
One full developmental edit pass
Detailed editorial assessment
Halfway-point update
Loom video walkthrough
Worldbuilding glossary
One follow-up revision review
Post-edit debrief call
You will also receive in-manuscript comments covering areas such as plot, pacing, stakes, character arcs, worldbuilding and overall narrative cohesion.

The Comprehensive Editorial Suite is designed for authors who want support across all major editorial stages: developmental editing, copyediting and proofreading.
It includes everything in the Standalone Developmental Edit, plus a full copyedit and a full proofread.
Across these stages, you will receive marked-up manuscripts, notes and query sheets, consistency and continuity checks, a style sheet, a query resolution window and debrief support after each stage.
The Comprehensive Editorial Suite gives you a streamlined and consistent experience. At the end, you’ll receive a manuscript that has been professionally supported from structural revision through to final polish.
-
The main difference is scope.
The Standalone Developmental Edit focuses solely on the developmental stage. It is best suited to authors who want professional structural feedback and revision support, but do not yet need copyediting and proofreading.
The Comprehensive Editorial Suite includes that same developmental support, but also takes your manuscript through the later editorial stages of copyediting and proofreading. It is a better fit for authors who want one trusted editorial partner across the full journey and a streamlined path to a professionally finished manuscript.
-
Please send your manuscript in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. I return editorial feedback in the same format. I do not edit PDFs.
-
The million-dollar question! The process depends on the length and stage of your manuscript, as well as the service you choose. For example, a Standalone Developmental Edit will usually have a shorter timeline than the Comprehensive Editorial Suite.
Once I know more about your manuscript, I’ll be able to give you a clearer sense of timing and availability. If you are working towards a particular publication date, you are welcome to mention this in your application form. I’ll always be honest about what is realistic for your project.

Yes. You retain ownership and final approval throughout the process. That’s the value of self-publishing.
The Publication Management Suite is a done-with-you service, not a publishing imprint. You keep your rights, your files, and your publishing accounts, and you make the final decisions. ISBN guidance is included, but the choice remains yours.

As part of the Publication Management Suite, EV Editing oversees the cover design process on your behalf. I develop the brief, coordinate with a trusted cover designer, manage communication and revision rounds, and ensure the final files are delivered in line with your publishing requirements.
-
Not at this stage. The Publication Management Suite includes positioning support such as blurb strategy, subgenre positioning, comparable title guidance, and keyword and category recommendations. However, it does not include ongoing marketing management or advertising campaign execution.
